| “A Race to Nowhere” | Discusses Pressure Kids Feel In School November 2nd, Wednesday 7-9pm in the WMS Auditorium World of Wellesley and Youth Commission will be sponsoring a showing for parents of “A Race to Nowhere,” a film by Vicki Abeles. Earlier this fall WPS educators and staff had the opportunity to view the movie as part of their back-to-school orientation. In the film a concerned mother turned filmmaker aims her camera at the culture of hollow achievement and pressure to perform that has invaded America's schools. This remarkable new film shines a light on the price our kids pay for this "race to nowhere." Contact Michelle Chalmers for further details. Visit the Race to Nowhere website to register for this screening.

| PUMPKIN FAIR | What an amazing Pumpkin Fair! The 2011 Pumpkin Fair was a great success thanks to the hard work, dedication and support of the Bates Community. There were so many people who came together to make this fair a wonderful event for Bates and the greater Wellesley community. The time, talents, and energy of each and every Bates family, (by working a shift, baking treats, helping with set-up or clean-up, or making a donation), made the Fair such a special day. Unfortunately, we can't list them all here. Keep your eye out for our thank you letter in the November Bates Beat where we list our Monster Sponsors and Corporate Sponsors. Thanks so much to all for your contributions to such an extraordinary day!! Janine Malone and Tiffany Zides - 2011 Pumpkin Fair Co-Chairs | P.E. Reminder! | Hello Bates families! October 27th - Message from the Principal - Halloween Parade & Car Line
Dear awesome Bates families,
The end of October is here, so it must be time for the Bates Halloween Parade! This annual tradition will be celebrated on Monday, October 31 at 9:00 AM. All parents are invited to come watch the fun! The parade route will begin by snaking out the playground-side exits of our two long classroom hallways. The classes will then be led out to Kelly Field, where they will form a giant, circular parade route. The students will continue to process in the circle a few times. Have your cameras locked and loaded, and come join us on Kelly Field where you can wave and click away to your heart’s content! Once the students have circled around a few times, they will then process back into the building and return to classrooms. Come join the excitement – it should be a great event!
Because the children will be celebrating in costume, please note the following rules so that your child is ready for the day: - SEND YOUR CHILD IN COMPLETE COSTUME
- IF YOU CHOOSE FACE PAINT, IT MUST BE APPLIED AT HOME
- SEND A BAG WITH NAME MARKED AND A CHANGE OF CLOTHES IF APPROPRIATE. COSTUMES WILL BE CHANGED OUT OF ONCE CLASSROOM CELEBRATIONS ARE COMPLETE.
- COSTUMES ARE A FAMILY DISCRETION, BUT TOY GUNS, SWORDS, OR OTHER WEAPONS SHOULD NOT COME TO SCHOOL
Help us make our Halloween a great one by observing these rules. If you have any questions regarding Halloween at Bates, or if your family does not celebrate Halloween, do not hesitate to call or email me.
ONE MORE NOTE ABOUT (WHAT ELSE?) THE CAR LOOP! As we approach colder weather, please observe the following items to help our loop become even more “flowy”: - DROP OFF AT 8:15! Supervision is available starting at 8:15, and I have typically observed very little drop-off traffic until about 8:25. The heaviest volume of cars comes between 8:25 and 8:35. Start 10 minutes earlier and avoid the rush!
- I WILL EXTEND DROP-OFF INTO THE BUS LOOP ONCE BUSES HAVE PASSED THROUGH. If you notice the cone removed and an adult waving you in, you may continue as far as the bus lane to drop off. This will greatly accelerate the flow of arrival.
We are constantly thinking of ways to improve our car lane so that the experience is quicker, rewarding, and safe. Please observe the above guidelines and aid us in the cause!
Stay dry, David

September 1, 2011 - Message from the Principal - September Monthly Fine folks of the Bates community, Greetings! Happy School Year! We begin 2011-2012 with buckets of energy and dollops of enthusiasm. The halls are gleaming and the classrooms are decorated. All the grown-ups who work at Bates are ready and eager to start their good work with the students. A fabulous year of learning and growing is begun, so climb on board!
If you have not yet met me, my name is David Ieong, and I am the new principal of the Katharine Lee Bates School. I have arrived to find, in this place, a high-performing and highly caring community. It is a place that embodies the abbreviation “KLB”. KLB. Kindness. Learning. Best effort. These three principles define and permeate everything that we believe and do at Bates School. Few have embodied these values better than the lady who shares those initials: Katharine Lee Bates. The daughter of a minister who passed away less than a month into Katharine’s life, she worked relentlessly to better herself. Katharine (or “Katie”, as she was known to those close to her) became the second class president ever of Wellesley College, going on to become a full professor there and, eventually, chair of the English Literature department. Beyond leaving an indelible mark on that fine institution, she gained national acclaim as an author, publishing books, poems, and eventually the words to a song that would remain on lips and in the hearts of millions of Americans. “America the Beautiful” became so loved that it was once offered up as a possible national anthem for our country, and is sung with great affection to this day. Despite her renown, Katie always maintained a kind and genuine regard for all those who came into her life. This warmth of character shone through in her moving passages of verse, particularly those she wrote for children. If we at Bates can teach our own children to show the kindness, learning, and best effort that Katie herself embodied, then we have more than succeeded in our work. If your children attend Bates, know that they are Bates penguins! Tux the Penguin is our mascot, approved by vote of the student body early this millennium. Penguins are smart, nurturing, and fiercely brave. As we foster these attributes within our students, keep an eye out for all signs of Penguin Power at Bates this year! And also look for sightings of Tux himself! I ask of few things of you, dear Bates community members, to help uphold our mission and lead KLB by example: - We will focus on a number of things to support and uphold our instructional day, or “learning time”, so that our kids may be able to maintain focus on the same
- Prime “learning time” is defined by the hours of our instructional day: 8:35 to 3:05. Please have your student at school on time! Supervision begins outside at 8:15, doors open at 8:30, and students are tardy at 8:35.
- To further support learning time and also ensure safety of the building, all adults must sign in to the office upon entering the building. Where is the office now, you ask? Yes, it has moved since last year – upon entering the main doors, turn left and you’ll find the main office door soon on your right hand side.
- Stay in close contact with your classroom teacher. The classroom teacher is the primary adult relationship for parents throughout the year. Reach out, call, or email whenever you have a joy or concern with your child’s learning.
- Go Green! The Bates community places a very high value on “green initiatives” to protect our environment and make the world a better place for all. Such collective works as “litter-less lunches” and “no idling” in the car lane are hallmarks of our global consciousness and good citizenship. See the Bates Beat and weekly email notices for further details on how you can do your part.
- Take part in our fun! Due to the fine work of our parents, teachers, and students, Bates engages in an uncommonly high number of school-centered activities. Whether it be Pumpkin Fair, Bates in Bloom, Arts Extravaganza, PTO Auction, or any other amazing event, Bates is a constantly bustling and vibrant place. Join us and be a part of the action!
The stage is set for a fantastic school year. Never hesitate to contact me should you ever feel the need. I am here to support you, the staff, and not least of all the children. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get started on our great work together as 2011-2012 gets underway! All my best, David Ieong
August 29, 2011 - Message from the Principal - nut free policy & update from Food Services
Dear Bates families,
As you know, many students have peanut or nut allergies that can be potentially health or life-threatening . You will receive notification on the first day if your class is a nut-free classroom. In the meantime, please plan for snacks this week to be nut-free and also not made in a peanut facility (this is typically indicated on the package).
Thanks for your help, David Ieong Bates principal Please see attachment from Wellesley Food Services regarding new debit system

Bates Green Team Initiatives Where Your Efforts Can Make a Difference
|
Make Everyday a ‘Litter-less Lunch’ Day
1. Encourage your children to help pack their lunch. Pack portions that they will eat to minimize leftovers. 2. Start with a reusable lunch bag, or lunchbox. 3. Use a refillable drink bottle for water or juice. Avoid juice boxes, pouches and plastic water bottles!! 4. Pack all food in reusable containers. Avoid plastic wrap & bags, foil and pre-packaged foods. 5. Use reusable cutlery and remind your kids to bring it home.
No Idling! • Want to know how to: Save $$$$$? • Protect Your Engine? • Reduce Air Pollution? • Stop Climate Change?
School Supplies • Use supplies you have left over from last year. • Fill the gaps purchasing supplies: • with minimal amount of packaging • that are made from recycled or biodegradable products.
Inspire your children to be as GREEN as you can be!

August 25, 2011 - Communication @ Bates Greetings Bates Parents! The Bates PTO would like to wish you a happy back to school. We hope that you all had a great summer! Together with Principal, David Ieong, we are making some changes to our communication process this year. Our goal is to streamline communication between the PTO, parents and administration. We want to keep everyone informed not overloaded. We also hope to minimize our use of paper in the backpacks as much as possible. Here are the highlights: - Thursday evening email blasts - We will be sending weekly email blasts on Thursday night. These emails will contain brief announcements of events and activities for the following school week. For more details we may include a link to the PTO website.
- PTO Website – The website will house all of our “reference material” for the Bates PTO. We hope that you take a minute to familiarize yourself with the site. Click the blue link above and save as a bookmark for future use. Below is just some of the information you will find on the site: (again blue links will bring you to the web)
- Calendar of Events – Upcoming events are on the homepage. Later dates are on the Calendar Tab.
- Committee Highlights - Pumpkin fair needs volunteers, Treasurers are looking for dues…check out the home page to make sure you are up to date with your to do’s.
- History of PTO Emails - Think you missed an email? Check the website to find out.
- Lunch menu - No menu in the backpack? Check on-line!
- Bates Beat - The Beat is an electronic newsletter highlighting activities at Bates as well as district wide events. Monthly emails will be sent with a link to a PDF file. You can access the Bates Beat via the website as well.
- Bates Directory - This hard copy directory contains contact information for teachers, students and parents. Data is organized by classroom and by family. Publication date is mid to late September. PLEASE NOTE – all contact information comes directly from PowerSchool. If you information has not been updated in PowerSchool it will not be correct in the Directory.
- Bates Handbook - David is in the process of updating the Handbook. It contains the mission of the school, school policies and procedures. There is some information on events, calendars and staffing. For now, please refer to the PTO website or official Bates website for this information until the Handbook has been updated. Thank you!
Over the course of the first weeks of school, we will be evaluating new tools to better integrate all of the information mentioned above. We appreciate your patience as we try new ways to better serve the Bates Community. Thanks so much! Kelli Sacher & Mary Cook – PTO Presidents Kristin Donahue – PTO Communication David Ieong – Bates Principal
August 23, 2011 - Message from our Principal, David Ieong Greetings Bates parents and families, Please find an informational letter about the new school food service attached to this email. There is a matter regarding lunch accounts that requires quick attention if it applies to you; I apologize that you did not receive this letter sooner.
Also, as we approach that very exciting first day of school, there are a couple notes I'd like to share with you.
Our new daily cut-off time for change in dismissal is 2:00. This is a half-hour earlier than the previous time of 2:30. This change was made in order to give the school a reasonable amount of time to adequately share information internally about all dismissal changes, as well as maintain a healthy amount of time during the school day for parents to make changes and contact the school. Please also know that all contacts about dismissal changes MUST GO TO THE MAIN OFFICE only. Classes are in session until 3:00 and teachers are focusing on instruction as their main responsibility during the day.
Since the first PTO mailing, I have more recent announcements on new Bates staff to make:
Ms. Laura Chadwick will not be returning to Bates in the fall. We have two music teachers new to Bates who will share the teaching responsibilities. Katherine Greene will teach K-3 general music, 5th grade chorus, and orchestra. Magen Slesinger (who also teaches music at Hardy School) will teach 4th and 5th grade general music. Genie Gledhill (a returning Bates staff member) will teach as a long-term substitute for two maternity leaves: Miranda Wolfskill (grade 2) in the fall, and then for Alissa Mandell (grade K) from the winter through the end of the year. Roberta Maguire will serve as one of our Reading Interventionists. Elizabeth Stravinski will be our Technology Specialist I am very excited to be having these skilled and energetic professionals joining our staff!
Enjoy the days of summer that remain. While the start of a school year is always filled with excitement and anticipation, also cherish the extra hours that are left with your children before they come to join us for the days. I eagerly await seeing them all at Bates School very soon!
Best, David Ieong Bates Principal
